Cute Redheaded Korean Babies

That's one of the visuals Selfie has put in its audience's heads, and one we cannot easily get rid of. Ever since Henry was told he and Eliza look good together, the idea of adorable Korean babies with fiery hair has been floating around in most epis and has me wondering if they really mean to make it a reality or just a matter of "what if". Probably not, what with all these rumors that the show might not even make it to next season, but I digress...
My Fair Lady was a big hit, even with me, and I came along WAY after that movie had been made and become famous, so I can see why ABC was sold on the dynamic between Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle. John Cho does make for a lovely modern day Henry Higgins, although, it's gotten me wondering if his character in this show is adopted. Far be it from me to be stereotypical and focus on sillly little things like race and ethnic background, but how does his Korean character come to be named Higgs and no one at the networks bats an eyelid? Or maybe they did, and we just weren't there...
ANYWAY! All that being said, Selfie really is one of the shows to watch this season; I don't care what anybody says.
How can you not love the ridiculously narcissistic, will-shrivel-up-and-die-the-day-cellphone-reception-becomes-obsolete, yet absolutely lovable, Eliza? Her buoyant zest for life is the perfect complement to Henry's calculated, uptight approach to living. At the risk of sounding cliched, they cool and fire each other up, as needed.
My favorite character though, is the great Mr. Sam Saperstein. Every scene with that man in it makes me hoot! Am I the only viewer who drools for a boss like that? That Lotus picture on the guest room wall said it all. Mr. Saperstein is the ultimate boss: fun, eccentric, extremely comfortable with his brand of crazy, has no problem mingling with even the lowest employees, and filthy rich, able to make or break your career. He and Charmonique, put the comedy in this rom-com.
Oh, and that Charmonique. Thanks to the writer who comes up with the quips for this character. My sides always hurt when she opens her mouth. "Get your Mr. Miyagi on. Time for a little wax-on, wax that ass"? Chuckling, even now.
And that look (complete with flared nose), as she stared at the preaching Mitchell Mchoney, her old high school heartthrob, now turned priest, was absolutely priceless. "I can't believe I wore my T-Boz for this". You could tell she was cursing up a storm in her head.
No way this show should be taken off air.

Of TV and Romance

I've surprised myself this fall. After being a card-carrying, sign-toting member of the "Chick flicks are for ditzes", I've found myself drawn to that very genre lately. I wonder if it has anything to with me and where I am on the dating circuit. Anyway, this change has had me quite puzzled. How does a person go from wanting to only watch guts and gore like The Blacklist, 24, Oz,  Major Crimes, The Closer,The First 48, Tyrant, Graceland, to airy, lighthearted fluff pieces like Selfie, Manhattan Love Story,  New Girl ?
Right now, my most favorite rom-com on tv  (have 26 epis on my DVR that I CANNOT bear to part with) is The Mindy Project.
Every time I wind and rewind the scenes on this show, which is almost every last one of them, I feel a part of me hovering over my shoulder, wondering, "Dude, what the hell?" I can barely recognize me. If anyone had told me I'd be this into rom-coms, I'd have told them to go and sit on a busy highway till someone ran them over: that's how much I hated romantic comedies. Couldn't stomach that stuff at all; now it's all I want to see. My epis of Blacklist, Marvel's The Shield, Tyrant are piling up and I could care less. There is so a part of me that's really eschewing drama, and I suspect it's a side effect to the trauma I've dealt with the last couple of years. It's like, if it's not making me laugh, then I don't to see it all.
So, I've watched True Blood, Scandal, The Newsroom, Franklin and Bash mostly for the rom-com content; if that upheaval that goes on in Scandal can be even remotely labeled as comedic. We shall get into all that.
I dedicate this blog to the shows that propelled me into the TV writing world.
